What is pH?

pH is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration; a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic, and a pH greater than 7 is basic. Each whole pH value below 7 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value. For example, a pH of 4 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than a pH of 6. The same holds true for pH values above 7, each of which is ten times more alkaline—another way to say basic—than the next lower whole value. For example, a pH of 10 is ten times more alkaline than a pH of 9.

Is all water the same?

Our bodies are made up of mainly water so the kind and quality of water you drink deserves to have a fuss made over it!

Knowing a water’s pH is important when it comes to maintaining proper body cell and tissue pH in the body. A pH level measures how acidic or alkaline something is.   For example, a pH of 0 is totally acidic, while a pH of 14 is completely alkaline, and a pH of 7 is neutral. These levels vary throughout the human body and in the water we drink.  Our pH level needs to be kept at 7.4 (neutral) to be healthy and prevent diseased cells and virus-bacteria fungus from multiplying.

3pH Soda/Cola:   Sodas and colas are about the most acidic thing you can buy to drink! The pH level of soda is  approximately 2.3 to 3.5 on the pH scale.

4pH Bottled Water:  The countless brands of water at our local retail stores can actually measure very acidic.  High pH water can be purchased by the bottle but it is not ionized which demonstrates the antioxidant properties.  The majority of bottled water ranges from 4 to 7 on the pH scale.

5pH Reverse Osmosis (RO):  Reverse Osmosis is a water purification process in which feed water is processed through a membrane. This membrane stops contaminated water, cleaning solutions and undissolved materials from passing through. The clean water is sent along to the point of use and the contaminants are discharged.  The process, combined with pre-filtration, is able to remove 90 to 99.99% of the dissolved impurities that reside in your water. Reverse Osmosis water is typically between 5 and 6 on the pH scale.

6pH Distilled Water:  Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapor condensed. Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes.  Distilled water is typically more acidic than reverse osmosis water.

7pH Tap Water: Tap water is publicly available treated water used for drinking, washing, cooking, and the flushing of toilets.  Specific chemical compounds are often taken out of tap water during the treatment process to adjust the pH or remove contaminants, and chlorine may be added to kill biological toxins. Tap water is between 7 and 8 on the pH scale.

8pH Remineralized: Water which has been purified or filtered and essential minerals are added back into the water.

Why is it important to balance my body’s pH?

Our body’s optimum pH level is between 7.35 and 7.45. Just the slightest deviation may leave us susceptible to disease and illness. pH stands for the potential of hydrogen. Simply put, it is the amount of acidic hydrogen in water. Few know that there is actually two types of hydrogen. One is acidic and one is alkaline. Why is dehydration such a big concern?

Dehydration is a factor in many major health problems. Common effects of dehydration can include: low energy, migraines, type II diabetes, hypertension, weight gain, low back pain and colon problems.  Dehydration is a condition where more fluid is leaving the body than is coming in. It is very important for keeping cells, tissues and organs in good condition. For example, fluid is needed to transport nutrients, prevent constipation, and regulate temperature.

Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in.  Common causes of dehydration include vigorous exercise, intense diarrhea, vomiting, fever or excessive sweating.  Young children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses are most at risk. Dehydration is a real problem, especially for those who believe that beverages like coffee and sodas can substitute for pure drinking water. Eating and drinking the wrong foods will lead to dehydration. Foods such as fruits and vegetables can provide up to 20 % of our daily water intake and junk foods do little to help us remain fully hydrated.   Clear urine is a sure sign of hydration.

Drinking a sufficient amount of water, usually at least eight 8 ounce glasses each and every day, is the most important thing we can do for our bodies. How does alkaline water work with stomach acid?

A common question from consumers is “won’t the acid in my stomach simply cancel the alkalinity of the water?”

The fact of the matter is that alkaline antioxidant water actually helps make the stomach become more acidic!

Stomach pH value is maintained at around 4.  When eating, you should chew each mouthful of food thoroughly until it is liquefied and mixed with abundant saliva. Once the food is swallowed, your body will produce a strong gastric acid called hydrochloric acid to begin the process of stomach digestion. The hydrochloric acid is produced instantly on an as-needed basis and is necessary in the digestion of food and kills the kinds of bacteria and viruses that come with the food.

When we drink alkaline water, the pH value inside the stomach goes up. When this happens, there is a feedback mechanism in our stomach to detect this and commands the stomach wall to secrete more hydrochloric acid into the stomach to bring the pH value back to 4 so the stomach becomes acidic again.

Drinking alkaline/antioxidant water on an empty stomach flows directly through into the small intestine. The stomach does not produce acid unless there is food in the stomach. The small amount of stomach acid in an empty stomach is not enough to neutralize the alkaline levels in alkaline/antioxidant water.

What is ORP?

ORP is a measurement of the actual electrical energy in the water. How can water be electric? Water can contain ions that are either positive or negative in significantly large amounts giving the water an actual electrical charge. This is what is measured by an ORP meter. A negative charge on an ORP meter means an abundance of negative charges and free electrons in the water that are available to the consumer to eradicate free radicals. Each free radical is looking for an electron and if they find it from water molecules it saves the body from contributing those electrons from its vital cells.

How often and how much phwatr should I drink?

During the day one should consume 8 to 10 ounces at least every two hours. If one uses phwatr for their beverages one can include this in their water intake. Consuming acidic beverages such as wine, beer or soft drinks should be counteracted as much as possible by increasing the intake of phwatr. Two large glasses of phwatr usually relieves a hangover in a very short period of time. A hangover is actually an episode of acute dehydration of the brain caused by over consumption of alcohol. Consuming a large glass of phwatr prior to retiring for the night will frequently allow one to awake without a hangover.

Is phwatr good to drink during a workout?

Why is phwatr better for athletes than sports drinks?

Is it okay to take my prescription pills with phwatr?

phwatr tends to increase the absorption of anything taken with it. This includes nutrients from food or from nutritional supplements and also from pharmaceutical medication. Consequently one should not take pharmaceutical medication with phwatr. Pharmaceutical medications are designed to be taken with tap water and absorbed at the specific rate at which tap water allows. Increasing the speed of absorption might be a challenge in some situations and consequently we recommend medications be taken with bottled or tap water.

Is phwatr safe for my children to drink?

Children generally enjoy phwatr and its refreshing thirst quenching qualities. Many children who would normally refuse to drink water will gladly consume phwatr in healthy amounts. Young children are naturally alkaline in their bodies generally don’t move into the acid range unless they are fed high sugar, highly processed artificial diets. These children need pH water for sure. If children are fed properly they probably do not need to drink pH water until they are in grade 6. Strangely enough, children who usually do not like water will absolutely love pH water and drink it with zeal. The wonderful thing about pH water is that it makes all drinks taste better. Adding it to healthy juice for a child will improve the juice dramatically in flavor and pH. Using it for cooking will improve the taste of food and make the food slightly more alkaline which is only a good thing.

Is phwatr safe for pregnant women?

Any woman who is going to get pregnant should be drinking phwatr and should continue to drink it throughout the pregnancy. If a woman is already pregnant then dramatic shifts in the kind of water are cautioned against if a woman has not been drinking phwatr she should wait until after she delivers the baby to start on phwatr. During her pregnancy she should drink mildly alkaline spring water if it is available.

Should my pets be drinking phwatr?

Most pets, when given the choice between antioxidant water and tap water, chose antioxidant water. Dogs, especially older ones that have eaten commercial dog food, may be quite acidic. They will especially benefit from drinking phwatr. Cats do not fare as well with antioxidant water which should be mixed with purified water to decrease the pH somewhat. Horses and cattle benefit greatly from the use of antioxidant water. Veterinary animal studies have shown significantly increased production of milk in dairy cows. Animals tend to have a better sense of what is good or not good for them. They are not influenced by commercials on television and ads in magazines. The fact that animals will choose antioxidant water over other waters is clear evidence that it is the preferable beverage.

Will my phwatr filter protect me against a boil alert?

All phwatr products have some ability to protect from bacteria and other microorganisms that might end up in a municipal water supply that fails to completely clean the water. This does not mean that one should rely on any process short of boiling to kill all microorganisms that might be present in a boil water alert. phwatr products are designed to enhance the qualities of water that is already drinkable.

Why can’t I just drink tap water?

Tap water is highly processed. The processing in order to make it healthy according to the authorities alters the water in dramatic ways. It makes the water positively charged in addition to containing chlorine, chloramines and numerous other chemicals.

I know I can run regular tap water through my phwatr filter, but what are the benefits of running reverse osmosis though it?

How long will my phwatr filter last?

Your phwatr filter will last for 300 litres at a 9.5+ pH and negative ORP.  To illustrate, that’s replacing up to 600 bottles of water (500 ml each). Your phwatr stick will last approximately 40 litres or 80 bottles of water.
